The Effect of Microstructure Development on the Collisional Stress Tensor in a Granular Flow

چکیده

Many oi the observed but yet unexplained phenomena associated with granular flow have been attributed to the development of a layered microstructure within the material. In particular the microstructure development has been called on to explain ma, ny of the experimental observations that cannot be accounted for in the presently avMlable theoreticM studies. While the attributions are based on sound physical arguments, the complexity of the processes involved has prohibited the inclusion of microstructure development in theoretical models. As a result no one has yet demonstrated how and to what extent the microstructure can account for the phenomena to which it has been ascribed. This paper addresses the effect of microstructure development for two dimensional flows by incorporating a heuristic model of the microstructure into a simple theoretical analysis.

Clusters in dense - inertial granular flows : two new views of the conundrum

There is a conundrum in the rheological behavior of Dense-inertial granular flows. Dense inertial flows are dominated by clusters of particles which provide a path for internal force transmission through the elasticity of the interparticle contacts. Yet arguably the presence or absence of the clusters have no quantitative effect on the stresses. One possible explanation is that, even though the...

A Novel Integrated Approach to Modelling of Depletion-Induced Change in Full Permeability Tensor of Naturally Fractured Reservoirs

More than half of all hydrocarbon reservoirs are Naturally Fractured Reservoirs (NFRs), in which production forecasting is a complicated function of fluid flow in a fracture-matrix system. Modelling of fluid flow in NFRs is challenging due to formation heterogeneity and anisotropy. Stress sensitivity and depletion effect on already-complex reservoir permeability add to the sophistication. Horiz...

The stress tensor for simple shear flows of a granular material

The complete stress tensor has been measured using a computer simulation of an assemblage of rough, inelastic spheres in an imposed simple shear flow. Only five components of the stress tensor were found to be significantly different from zero. These represent the disperssive normal stresses 7,,, 7yy and 7,, and the in-the-shearplane shear stresses 7,y and 7yz; furthermore, the two off-diagonal...

Spatial force correlations in granular shear flow. II. Theoretical implications.

Numerical simulations are used to test the kinetic theory constitutive relations of inertial granular shear flow. These predictions are shown to be accurate in the dilute regime, where only binary collisions are relevant, but underestimate the measured value in the dense regime, where force networks of size xi are present. The discrepancy in the dense regime is due to non-collisional forces tha...

The stress tensor in a two-dimensional granular shear flow

A computer simulation is used to make a detailed study of the stress tensor in a simple shear flow of two-dimensional disks. The stresses are shown to arise from two momentum-transfer mechanisms : the ‘streaming ’ or kinetic mode, by which momentum is carried by particles as they move through the bulk material; and the collisional mode, by which momentum is transferred from one point to another...
